In his first major independent release since winning the National Red Bull Emsee Competition in 2012, Mic Stewart is accompanied by nostalgic production courtesy of Philadelphia Producer SAMlive. [Album Review] “Reef The Lost Cauze is Dead” by Reef the Lost Cauze - Philly vet Reef the Lost Cauze serves up a 16-course meal of rhyme for thought on Christmas Day. Comprised entirely of classic and pop rock samples remixed by Caliph-NOW (minus one production appearance by long time collaborator Dumhi), ‘Lost Cauze is Dead winds up feeling incredibly cohesive; a quality often found when one MC works so closely with one producer. This is not the first time we’ve heard a producer go “BRO! You know what would be sweet, BRO! What if you rapped over classic rock beats, bro!” <- Most of the time these novice beat-maker-bros don’t know how to use their equipment, loop the same whack ass predictable hooks or bridges, ruin the groove with a stupid drum break, and mix the drums and vocals too loud…. Thankfully, Caliph-Now is no rookie. He doesn’t butcher these samples like your little cousin’s buddy who produces in his basement. The filters, chops, and drum breaks he selects actually rejuvenate some of my favorite rock tunes taking attention away from the fact that you recognize these samples and giving them new life. Even the cheesiest, most bubble-gum-80’s samples Caliph uses come off much more mellow, groovy, trippy, and quirky after he puts his hands on them.

Enter Lost Cauze: I spoke with Reef briefly about this project. Lacking some of the extensive marketing and promotion behind his last release, Your Favorite MC, you might expect RTLCID to be a place-holder mixtape (though Reef doesn’t make “place-holder” garbage, I refer to light releases Hip Hop artists intermittently toss to loyal fans between larger production efforts). You would be remiss to assume this, and furthermore, erroneous on all accounts. Lost Cauze is Dead is an incredibly important album for Reef…

The gist of my conversation with Reef that I walked away with was this (this in no way reflects his opinions or his actual words, just how I read into them): He came up in a tough, machismo, respect/honor-based rap culture. One where hardness and battling were rewarded and revered. If you couldn’t snatch an MC’s soul, moreover if you WEREN’T snatching souls, you weren’t worth a listen.

Lost Cauze is Dead is a departure from that culture. Even among the breed of battle MC he represented for so long, he was anything but one-dimensional. He’s always been comical, honest, and an incredible story-teller. What you find in this new release is a more REFINED comedian story-teller, father, and teacher. With a tight grasp on his age, his role as a leader to Philly Hip Hop up-and-comers, and strong conviction as a father, Reef reveals his character like never before, uninhibited by the chains of “REAL HIP HOP” while strongly proclaiming that he is STILL the same Lost Cauze. Just a much freer, uncut version.
